Amino was responsible for extending MeeGo to TV devices, while Novell was increasingly introducing technology that was originally developed for openSUSE, (including Open Build Service, ZYpp for package management, and other system management tools). Īminocom and Novell also played a large part in the MeeGo effort, working with the Linux Foundation on their build infrastructure and official MeeGo products. (Any previous Maemo versions up to Maemo 5, a.k.a. Those notice stated that Harmattan is now considered to be a MeeGo instance (though not a MeeGo product), and Nokia is giving up the Maemo branding for Harmattan on the Nokia N9 and beyond.

The stated aim is to merge the efforts of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo former projects into one new common project that would drive a broad third party application ecosystem. MeeGo T01 was first announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2010 by Intel and Nokia in a joint press conference.

Another Mer derivative called Nemo Mobile was also developed. A Finnish start-up, Jolla, picked up Mer to develop a new operating system: Sailfish OS, and launched Jolla Phone smartphone at the end of 2013. A community-driven successor called Mer was formed that year. The Linux Foundation canceled MeeGo in September 2011 in favor of Tizen, which Intel then joined in collaboration with Samsung. Nokia wanted to make MeeGo its primary smartphone operating system in 2010, but after a change in direction it was stopped in February 2011, leaving Intel alone in the project. Primarily targeted at mobile devices and information appliances in the consumer electronics market, MeeGo was designed to act as an operating system for hardware platforms such as netbooks, entry-level desktops, nettops, tablet computers, mobile computing and communications devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, SmartTV / ConnectedTV, IPTV-boxes, smart phones, and other embedded systems. MeeGo is a discontinued Linux distribution hosted by the Linux Foundation, using source code from the operating systems Moblin (produced by Intel) and Maemo (produced by Nokia). This release is out in time for the MeeGo Conference in San Francisco which runs from 23 to 25 May.Terminated in favor of Tizen. MeeGo adheres to a six month cycle so the 1.3 release will be due in October. Updates to the SDK are planned to add support for Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15, 64-bit Linux and Windows a Mac OS X SDK is due by the end of 2011.ĭevelopment on MeeGo 1.3 is already ongoing, with features already accepted in the developer's "Featurezilla". The MeeGo 1.2 SDK is available for developers working on the Core OS and supported UX options and can be run on Linux and Windows. Missing for this release is a Handset UX, development of which was led by Nokia, but there is a tablet developer preview. The release also includes the Netbook UX 1.2 (User eXperience), and In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) UX 1.2 with a speech recognition enabled, QML based application launcher and a sample IVI home-screen.

It also includes enhanced telephony and connectivity including GSM, GPRS and HSPA+ support, a SIM application toolkit, expanded Bluetooth profiles, VPN/wireless authentication methods, and more multimedia support with RTSP streaming and progressive download. The Core OS component of MeeGo 1.2 includes reference kernels for Intel Atom and ARMv7 platforms and a Qt/QML-based application framework with the Qt-Mobility APIs. The MeeGo project developers have announced the release of MeeGo 1.2, described as a "solid baseline for device vendors and developers to start creating software for various device categories".
